Cívica: more civic design, community, and collective intelligence

July has been a month of celebration. Every Friday, a member of the team has shared a blog about the topics that drive them and the way Cívica approaches them. On my turn, I want to take this opportunity to recognize the path traveled, give thanks for what has been built, and renew our gaze toward the future. For me, moreover, this anniversary has a special meaning: I am assuming the Executive Direction and the Quality and Continuous Improvement Direction of a space that has been my home for the last two years.

At Cívica, we celebrate this anniversary by reaffirming the principles that have guided our work and renewing our commitment to a way of designing that brings together creativity, participation, and collective knowledge.

Over the past few months, we have created a space to review our experience, recognize accumulated learning, and think about how we want to continue contributing to the organizations, institutions, and communities we collaborate with. This process is reflected in the renewal of our website, in a clearer presentation of our services, and especially in the shared clarity we have built as a team about what gives meaning to our work: understanding complex challenges and turning them, together with the people involved, into concrete possibilities for transformation.

In this journey, we are inspired by the Japanese principle of Kaizen: moving forward through small steps, daily learning, and continuous improvement. This perspective invites us to observe carefully, listen, experiment, and adjust, with a clear purpose: to build on what has been learned and strengthen what generates value.

From that perspective, civic design is our foundation for action. It is an approach that allows us to research with rigor, design with method, and facilitate processes oriented towards change. A process that brings together different voices, knowledge, and experiences to address questions that could hardly be solved from a single perspective.

For this reason, we involve from the very beginning those who know, live, or will use the solutions that emerge from each process. This allows us to respond better to the context, recognize existing capacities, and seize opportunities that favor a viable implementation. Designing in a situated way means assuming that there are no universal formulas: solutions must be tested, adapted, and evolve together with our counterparts.

This way of working takes shape in five service areas:

Strategic design of services and processes: we help translate an organization's priorities into services, processes, and tools that work in practice and improve their response capacity.

  1. Capacity management and human talent: we create learning and support experiences so that teams can strengthen their skills, share knowledge, and face their challenges with greater autonomy.

  2. Digital design and technological governance: we contribute to creating accessible and human-centered digital experiences, along with responsible criteria to guide the use and management of technology.

  3. Strategic alliances and creative advocacy: we facilitate connections between actors, build narratives, and design action paths to drive agendas and changes that require collaboration.

  4. Monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement: we generate processes that allow understanding results, recovering learning, and using evidence to adjust decisions and strengthen impact.

Together, these areas allow us to participate in the different stages of a process: understanding a challenge, imagining alternatives, putting them into practice, assessing their results, and learning from the experience. Furthermore, they express a conviction we have strengthened as a team over the years: technical tools reach their true potential when they engage with people, promote collaboration, and leave capacities built in organizations and communities.

In the coming months, we want to continue deepening this way of working. We will continue exploring creative uses of data to facilitate understanding and decision-making; promoting spaces where answers are built collectively; and designing experiences capable of turning conversations into agreements, capacities, and actions.

Above all, we want to strengthen a community that believes in civic design and collective intelligence. A community where differences are not seen as a barrier, but as an opportunity to broaden questions, enrich perspectives, and build better answers.

This new year at Cívica finds us with more experience, new tools, and great excitement for what we can continue to create. For me, it also represents the beginning of a new responsibility and the opportunity to contribute, from these roles, to caring for what has been built, strengthening the team, and opening up new possibilities.

We move forward step by step, convinced that the most significant transformations are born when we bring together knowledge, creativity, and the will to build together.
